A 100% online LPN doesn't exist in Florida, and any school selling one is a red flag. The theory can be online. The clinicals and skills labs must be in person. "Online in the beginning" is real and normal.

The public technical colleges are the cheap, legit winners. Skip for-profit "fast online" programs: Florida data shows they have the worst license-exam pass rates.

Suncoast has a campus in North Port (your town) and is the cheapest. Manatee has the only true evening/hybrid track built for a working parent. Those two are your finalists.

Your ~$6k Pell covers most of it. WIOA workforce funding plus one school scholarship closes the rest to zero, and WIOA can even pay for childcare and gas.

The honest part (read before you enroll)
You were right that it looks simpler online than it is. Here's the friction that trips people up, so none of it surprises you.
● Your Pell doesn't arrive as one check
For a clock-hour program, Pell pays in at least two halves, and the second half is not released until you've actually completed the hours and weeks of the first. So up-front costs (scrubs, books ~$1,850, stethoscope, background check, drug screen, immunizations) come out of your pocket first, before any refund lands. Keep a small cash cushion.
● Some fees are non-refundable and aid won't touch them
Roughly $600–$1,000 in pre-admission and licensure fees (application, TEAS, physical, and the NCLEX exam ~$200 + Florida license ~$110 at the very end) are not covered by financial aid, and the exam fees hit before your final refund. Budget cash for these two moments.
▲ Admission is ranked, not first-come
Even at "open admission" schools, the nursing track is competitive. You clear an entrance exam (TEAS, and PERT at Manatee), attend a mandatory info session, finish prereqs, then get ranked against other applicants. Clearing the minimum is not the same as getting in.
▲ "Hybrid" means you teach yourself the theory
The recurring student complaint across these programs: lectures are self-paced online and you carry the learning load. For a disciplined adult that's survivable and flexible. Go in expecting it, not expecting hand-held lectures.
▲ Judge a school on its NCLEX pass rate, not graduation rate
Schools advertise graduation and job-placement rates (which look great). The number that matters is the first-time NCLEX-PN pass rate. Ask each program for its most recent one in writing before you commit. This is where the three schools genuinely differ.

A 12-month program spans two federal aid years. If you don't submit the next year's FAFSA, your second batch of Pell stalls. Put a reminder on the calendar now.

Top school options, ranked for you
All four are Florida Board of Nursing–approved, 1,350 hours (~12 months), and Pell-eligible. Costs are all-in estimates (tuition + fees + books + supplies); confirm the exact figure with each financial aid office.

Why it's #1: the only genuine evening/hybrid track, historically two nights a week (5:30–9:30p) plus every other weekend. Best-documented and most transparent of the three, and their own writeup notes most students held full-time jobs while attending. The catch: those every-other-weekend all-day sessions are the part people underestimate. The school does not offer student loans directly (Pell/grants/scholarships only).
Why it's here: there's a branch campus in North Port, and it's the lowest sticker price. The honest catch: the most consistent negative signal of the three. Reviews repeatedly describe "no real teaching, you're self-taught," crowded classes, and unhelpful admin. At the info session, ask point-blank: the first-time NCLEX pass rate for the last two cohorts, and how much is live instruction vs. self-paced computer time.
Why it's here: the closest drive and by far the warmest instructor reputation (students single out Mr. Christian and Mr. Jimenez as genuinely supportive). The catch: its 93% graduation headline sits next to a ~78% first-time NCLEX pass rate in the state's own 2018 data, the weakest hard number of the three. That gap is exactly the "more complicated than it looks" thing. That figure is dated, so ask for the current-year pass rate in writing.

Keep in your back pocket. A solid public PN program, but the farthest drive and mostly in-person, so it only makes sense if a start date or waitlist beats the closer three. Est. all-in ~$9,340 unverified.

How to close the gap to $0
You don't need all of these. The top one alone probably finishes the job. Work down the list until the gap is gone.

WIOA / CareerSource workforce funding
Free money
Your best next move. Florida funds training for in-demand jobs, and nursing usually qualifies. When approved it can cover tuition, books, uniforms, the NCLEX fee, and even childcare and gas. Applicants with dependent children get priority, which is you.
How to apply
Create a profile at Employ Florida (employflorida.com). This is the required first step.
Call your local office to book the orientation / intake appointment.
Bring income + work-history docs, ID, Social Security card. Incomplete files are the #1 reason people stall.
Confirm in writing that LPN is on their current in-demand list and your school is on the state approved-provider list (ETPL).
Approval is gated by income eligibility, the occupation list, and the school-approval list, and case managers are an inconsistent bottleneck. Three survival tips from successful applicants: apply ~6 months before your start date, get every answer in writing, and if a caseworker stonewalls you, escalate to a supervisor (the people who escalated got funded). Note: funding may steer you toward the cheapest approved school.

School foundation scholarship + Workforce Certificate Grant
Fastest win
The most overlooked money, and the least competitive. Every one of these colleges has a foundation scholarship pool, and Florida has a Workforce Certificate Grant for career-certificate students that often closes the gap by itself.
Ask your school's financial aid office two exact questions: "What's my precise gap after my $6k Pell?" and "How do I apply for the foundation scholarship and the Workforce Certificate Grant?"
At Manatee, internal awards auto-apply from your FAFSA. At Suncoast and Charlotte, it's a separate short application, so ask for the link.

Nursing scholarships
Free money
Smaller ($500–$2,500) but they stack, and they're ideal for covering the exam fees and books that Pell may not stretch to.
The Florida Nurses Foundation award requires a nationally nursing-accredited program (ACEN/CNEA/CCNE). Many public tech-college PN programs are accredited by COE and Board-approved but not nursing-accredited. Confirm your school's accreditation before spending time on this app.

Employer / hospital sponsorship
Free money
Nursing homes and hospitals are desperate for LPNs and routinely pay for training in exchange for a work commitment after you're licensed. If you're open to that, it can cover everything and hand you a job. Worth a call to Sarasota Memorial, ShorePoint, and local long-term-care facilities, especially if you'd take a CNA/aide role first.

Subsidized federal loan
Backstop only
Only if 1–4 don't fully close the gap. A subsidized Direct Loan means the government pays the interest while you're in school, the cheapest possible debt, and no payments until after you finish. As a mother of 3 you're an independent student. Ask the FA office for your exact (prorated) subsidized amount, borrow only that, and skip the unsubsidized portion. Note: Manatee doesn't offer loans in-house, so this route means Suncoast or Charlotte.

Don't skip: childcare help
This is a real out-of-pocket cost most aid ignores. Good news: being enrolled in school ≥20 hrs/week counts as a qualifying reason for care, the same as a job. You do not have to be working to qualify.
Florida School Readiness (childcare subsidy)
Sliding-scale childcare assistance by income and household size. Apply through the Family Portal, then follow up by phone. Apply now, especially the Charlotte coalition, which runs a waitlist.
*North Port is in Sarasota County, so ELC of Sarasota is your coalition. Use the Charlotte line only if you're actually across the county line.
